The Transition from North to South

Learn about the ups, downs, good, and bad of a UNC out-of-state freshman and her experience so far.

About

My name is Madelyn Hanes, and this website is part of my MEJO 121 class at UNC Chapel Hill. It's focused on my rooommate Misha, whose experiences as an out-of-state student at UNC are the central theme of my project. Before diving into her story, I'd like to share a bit about myself.

Background

I am originally from Asheboro, North Carolina where I lived until I was about five years old. My mom and dad then moved us to Winston Salem, North Carolina where they were born and raised. Before moving onto campus in August I had lived there for the majority of my life. I have an amazing family back home, consisting of my younger sister who is still in grade school, and two loving parents who helped me get to where I am today. Growing up in Winston I went to public school my whole life and was involved in a variety of sports and extracurriculars throughout school until I graduated. I held two captain roles in high school on the Varsity Dance Team and Track and Field. I also led the creation of my mental health blog at the end of my junior year. So when it came to applying to Chapel Hill, I was still extremely worried about my odds due to all of the intelligence and great experiences around me.

Going to Chapel Hill had always been a dream of mine, having grown up going to games, with my parents and aunts attending UNC as well, one could say I was bound to end up here no matter what. So, when I went through the admissions process, I gave it my best shot. Come January, I was blessed enough to be granted a scholarship, asked to join Honors Carolina, be a part of the assured admit group of students to the Hussman School of Media and Journalism. With that, my family and I felt like my choice for college was pretty set in stone. Regardless of my family history, I am so happy that I have been able to start paving my way here at Carolina. GO HEELS!

Academics

As I stated before I am currently an Honors student at UNC, having just started my freshman year in August. I am hoping to double major in Exercise Sports Science (concentration in Sports Administration) and Media and Journalism (concentration in PR/Advertising). I am still working through what my minor will be, but I am leaning towards Entrepreneurship or Sports Medicine. Outside of my majors/minors, I plan on going abroad during the Spring of my sophomore or junior year. I also plan on completing my Sports Communications Certificate through the Hussman school to add to my knowledge on my field of study. Additionally, I am looking forward to expanding my experiences in sports marketing/management by getting into Summer internship opportunities where I can find them. With that, I am beyond excited to continue the next four years here and I cannot wait to see where UNC will take me.
